Ministry of Education

Japan’s Ministry of Education announced on the 24th the results of textbook screening for materials to be used mainly by second‑year high school students starting in fiscal 2027. Many textbooks included new content addressing the characteristics and risks of generative AI.

This was the second screening based on the current curriculum guidelines. A total of 200 textbooks across eight subjects (excluding specialized fields) were submitted by 22 publishers. Of these, 196 textbooks from 21 publishers passed, while examiners issued 3,760 correction notices for inaccurate or inappropriate descriptions.

Four textbooks failed: one each in “Integrated History” and “World History Inquiry,” and two in “Japanese History Inquiry,” all from the same publisher, Reiwa Shoseki. The ministry said the rejected books were “almost identical in content to junior high school textbooks approved in FY2023 and did not align with high school curriculum standards.”
